Getting here and getting around

Novi Pazar is usually reached by bus; the station is in town, telephone 020/318-354. The city itself is compact and level in the centre, so everything in the bazaar is done on foot. For Sopoćani (15 km) and the Stari Ras fortifications (10—11 km) you need a car, a taxi or an arranged transfer — there is no dependable public transport to the sites themselves.

Behaviour at places of worship

The city has working mosques and working monasteries, and the same basic rules apply to both: shoulders and knees covered, quiet behaviour, and visits outside prayer or service times. Shoes come off at the door of a mosque, and women cover their hair as well. Ask before photographing inside — in some places it is allowed, in others not.

When to come

From late spring to autumn everything is open and passable, including the climbs to Đurđevi Stupovi and the Ras fortifications. In summer avoid the middle of the day for outdoor sites. In winter the city runs normally, but the higher parts of Golija are hard to reach and the unmade paths to the archaeological sites turn slippery.
