One route, three sites
The road west out of town follows the Raška valley and strings together, within about fifteen kilometres, the Stari Ras fortifications and Sopoćani monastery. The stretch as far as Pazarište is gentle, with little height gain, and suits a bicycle; the final climb to the fortifications themselves is on foot, over unmade ground.
Above Pazarište stand Gradina-Pazarište and Gradina-Postenje, the two strongholds of medieval Ras, and about fifteen kilometres out is Sopoćani monastery. The whole ensemble was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979 as "Stari Ras and Sopoćani" — which means this route passes World Heritage in the course of an afternoon, without a gate or a ticket barrier anywhere on it.
The valley opens out and softens along the way: meadows, fields and hamlets on the slopes, with the river on one side of the road. There is traffic, but it is a local road without a lorry column, so the cycling takes no particular effort. Anyone walking usually drives as far as Pazarište and starts from there — the climb to the hillforts themselves is short but steep, over unmade ground.
