A city founded as a market
When Isa-beg Ishaković founded the settlement in 1461, he endowed it with a marketplace and a han alongside the mosque and the bath. The city was created in order to be traded in, on the road that ran from the Republic of Dubrovnik to Istanbul in the 16th and 17th centuries. Workshops still stand in rows, grouped by trade, the way a bazaar has always been ordered.
