A city of four valleys
Novi Pazar lies at 496 metres above sea level, in the valleys of the Raška, Jošanica, Deževska and Ljudska rivers. That knot of valleys explains the city's shape: the bazaar gathered on the flat ground by the water, while the residential quarters climbed the slopes on every side.
The Raška rises west of the city, in the country where Sopoćani stands, and flows through the very centre of Novi Pazar before joining the Ibar at the town that shares its name.
A walk along the water
The banks in the centre are laid out as a promenade and form the natural link between the fortress, the bazaar and the main square. Cafés and benches line the water, and on summer evenings this is where the city gathers.
