Bazaar and mahalas
An Ottoman town was two worlds: the çarşı — the working quarter on flat ground by the water, with its shops, hans and bath — and the mahalas, the residential districts scattered on the slopes around it. That arrangement is still legible in Novi Pazar: commerce remains down by the river, while the houses climb the hills.
Walking through the centre, look at the ground floors: narrow shop fronts, rows of workshops set side by side, and the same trades clustered along the same stretch of street — all traces of an older order.
